Would Ian McKellen Play Gandalf in LOTR Prequel?

Sir Ian McKellen has suggested he would be up for reprising his role as Gandalf in the Lord of the Rings prequel series at Amazon.

The streaming service agreed a deal back in November to air a new prequel series based on the JRR Tolkien series, and McKellen, appearing on Graham Norton’s BBC Radio 2 show, was asked about a new actor portraying the wizard, with the hosting commenting, “Amazon are doing a TV series of Lord of the Rings. Now isn’t that annoying? That there’s going to be another Gandalf in town?”

“What do you mean, another Gandalf?” replied McKellen, leading Norton to ask if he would be reprising the role.

“I haven’t said yes because I haven’t been asked. But are you suggesting that someone else is going to play it? Gandalf is over 7000 years old, so I’m not too old [yet].”

There isn’t a timeframe yet on casting news for the series, but if McKellen is genuinely interested, you have to think that Amazon bosses will at least give him a call.
