Rian Johnson is to direct a brand-new Star Wars trilogy.
The director – who helms this December’s The Last Jedi – will create a new series of films which will “introduce new characters from a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored.”.
Johnson will write and direct the first of the three new films, which will not be based around the Skywalker Saga set to conclude with Episode IX.
Says LucasFilm president Kathleen Kennedy;
“We all loved working with Rian on The Last Jedi. He’s a creative force, and watching him craft The Last Jedi from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career. Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy.”
No further information is yet available about the new trilogy, though you have to assume that if Johnson is being entrusted with the future of the Star Wars franchise, his bosses at LucasFilm and Disney must be very impressed with what they have seen of The Last Jedi.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi is released on December 15.
