Amazon have agreed a deal to air a new prequel series for Lord of the Rings.
The series will be set before The Fellowship of the Ring – but after The Hobbit, so only about 60 years to play with – and will contain brand-new material using JRR Tolkien’s characters.
The deal was agreed between the streaming service and the Tolkien estate, New Line Cinema and publisher HarperCollins for the series, and also includes a commitment for further series.
Says Tolkien Estate and HarperCollins’ representative Matt Galsor;
“We are delighted that Amazon, with its longstanding commitment to literature, is the home of the first-ever multi-season television series for The Lord of the Rings. Sharon [Tal Yguado, Amazon Studios executive] and the team at Amazon Studios have exceptional ideas to bring to the screen previously unexplored stories based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s original writings.”
Though no further information on the series has yet been announced, it is not expected that any of the original movie trilogy’s cast would return for the new show.
