Warner Bros. and DC Comics are developing a new standalone movie telling the origin story of The Joker.
Deadline are reporting that the project, which is in its very early days, will be produced by Martin Scorsese and directed by The Hangover director Todd Phillips.
It is further claimed that the movie would be under a new Warner Bros. banner that intends on featuring DC characters outside of the current continuity, offering unique storylines with different actors in the roles.
The planned Joker movie would not be tied to previous appearances of the character in Batman, The Dark Knight or Suicide Squad. Those films saw the makeup donned by Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger and Jared Leto, respectively.
The intention for this is to set the movie in the 1980s, offering a “gritty and hard-boiled” crime film that is less like previous DC movies and more in the vein of Scorsese’s classic ’80s movies Taxi Driver or Raging Bull.
Phillips is writing the script with 8 Mile scribe Scott Silver.
