Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures have confirmed the casting – and monsters – for Godzilla 2.
The movie, which does not yet appear to have an official title despite longstanding speculation that it would be named Godzilla: King of Monsters, will be the next step in the studio’s MonsterVerse. The original movie was released in 2014, with Kong: Skull Island coming earlier this year.
A post-credit sting in that movie teased the arrival of some classic Godzilla enemies and their participation in the follow-up has now been confirmed, with the new story following the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch and their battle against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species—thought to be mere myths—rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.
The movie sees Vera Farmiga and Ken Watanabe reprising their Godzilla roles, as well as Game of Thrones’ Charles Dance, Kyle Chandler, Millie Bobby Brown, Bradley Whitford, Thomas Middleditch, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Aisha Hinds and Zhang Ziyi. Michael Dougherty directs.
Godzilla 2, or whatever it ends up being called, is being lined up for a March 2019 release.
