Atari – yes, Atari – Are Working On a New Console

Atari have announced they will be releasing a new console – 24 years after they last released new hardware.

Company CEO Fred Chesnais confirmed to GamesBeat that a new games console is in the works, coming hot on the heels of a new video teasing something called the Ataribox.

Debuting on a non-Atari website and appearing to show hardware made at least in part from wood, many quickly dismissed it as fake. However Chesnais has confirmed the Ataribox is real and that they are “back in the hardware business.”

Chesnais did not divulge much about the planned new hardware, other than to say that it is based on PC technology and that the design of the console is still being worked on.

Atari filed for bankruptcy in 2013, with Chesnais purchasing the company and focusing on mobile games, something that has now made Atari profitable.
