Sony Announce Venom Solo Movie

Sony have announced plans to release a stand-alone Venom movie in 2018.

Last seen on the big screen in 2007’s Spider-Man 3, Venom – an alien symbiote looking for a human to play host to it – was planned for a big-screen spinoff previously, before the critical and commercial failure of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 put paid to those plans.

It will be directed by Alex Kurtzman, who is also helming this year’s The Mummy reboot. Matt Tolmach and Avi Arad will produce a script written by Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner. Amy Pascal will produce. Sony are working towards a 5 October 2018 release date, meaning production will need to start very soon.

Spider-Man himself will next be on the big-screen in Spider-Man: Homecoming on July 7, and there is no word yet on whether this new Venom project will tie into that in any way.
