Jack Swagger has left WWE after asking for his release.
Speaking on the Chael Sonnen podcast, Swagger confirmed that he asked the company for his release due to a lack of TV time and opportunities, and WWE accepted his request.
Swagger – real name Jake Hager Jr. – signed with WWE in 2006 and two years later made his TV debut on the company’s relaunched ECW brand. He soon won the ECW Championship and held it for over 100 days. He moved to Raw after losing the belt and after several months hit headlines when he cashed in the Money in the Bank contract on March 30 2009 to win the World Heavyweight championship. Once he lost the belt, however, Swagger soon dropped down the card, remaining in the midcard and oftentimes not on TV at all.
In 2013, Swagger returned to TV with a new heel persona and manager in Dutch ‘Zeb Colter’ Mantel, and won an Elimination Chamber match to earn a World Heavyweight title shot against Alberto Del Rio at WrestleMania 29. During the build-up to the WrestleMania match, Swagger was arrested for driving under the influence and drug possession. He was fined and given a suspended sentence, and predictably lost to Del Rio at Mania.
He continued his rivalry with Del Rio for a short time, before taking time off to heal an injury. When he returned, it was back in the familiar position of midcard. He would never reach the previous heights again.
WWE have yet to confirm Swagger’s release.
