Walt Disney’s new live-action re-telling of Beauty and the Beast has enjoyed a staggering opening weekend – taking in $350 million worldwide.
Bringing in £170 million in the US alone – well over the $130 million that industry experts predicted – which makes it the highest domestic debut for a live-action Disney movie, and only the seventh Walt Disney Studios release to open over $150 million. It also brought in a further $180 million internationally.
On a global scale, the $350 million takings, over only four days and from 56 markets, make it the fourteenth-biggest weekend opener in history.Additionally, IMAX-only takings have topped $21 million from 1,026 screens.
Basically, this has been a nostalgia- and music-filled license to print money from the House of Mouse.
Emma Watson and Dan Stevens star in the live-action remake, along with Luke Evans, Kevin Kline, Sir Ian McKellen, Ewan McGregor and Josh Gad.
