Johnny Depp will star alongside Eddie Redmayne in the sequel to Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
Deadline are reporting that the Pirates of the Caribbean star has signed on to appear in the Harry Potter spinoff, though what role he is playing is not yet known. Current speculation is that he will be playing dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald, widely regarded as second only to Voldemort when it comes to ultimate evil bad guy-ness in the Potter universe.
It is believed that Depp may briefly pop up in the first movie, due for release on November 18.
David Yates is on board to direct at least the first two of a planned five-movie Fantastic Beasts series.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them opens in 1926 as Newt Scamander has just completed a global excursion to find and document an extraordinary array of magical creatures. Arriving in New York for a brief stopover, he might have come and gone without incident…were it not for a No-Maj (American for Muggle) named Jacob, a misplaced magical case, and the escape of some of Newt’s fantastic beasts, which could spell trouble for both the wizarding and No-Maj worlds.
