New Pikmin Game Announced for the 3DS

A new Pikmin side-scroller is coming to the Nintendo 3DS, it was recently announced by Nintendo.

Currently titled Pikmin for 3DS, the new portable game was unveiled during this month’s Nintendo Direct, where a brief gameplay trailer revealed the player’s ability to throw the series’ blossom-headed mascots by tapping the screen with the 3DS stylus, constructing walkways and battling beasties alongside the intrepid Captain Olimar. You can see the adventurers in action below, towards the end of the Nintendo presentation (32:06).

This time from a side-scrolling perspective, the Red, Blue and Yellow Pikmin all look to be returning, as well as original series enemies such as the hulking, fanged Bulborb. While the game looks to feature much of the construction-oriented puzzle-solving of the original games, Nintendo explained that the 3DS game will carry an action focus, designed to “make you think fast and use every Pikmin to overcome anything that stands in your way.”

Pikmin 3 – the most recent entry in the series – released back in 2013, and word of a fourth game has been circulating for quite a while. Last year, Shigeru Miyamoto stated in an interview with Eurogamer that Pikmin 4 was “very close to completion” – though did not go into detail on what exactly the game entailed.

Pikmin for 3DS is currently expected to release in 2017, though an official release date has yet to be confirmed.
