The Tomb Raider franchise recently found a new director, and though a new game has yet to be revealed, it’s been confirmed that Ian Milham will be joining developer Crystal Dynamics to lead Lara’s next adventure.
Milham was the creative head behind Battlefield Hardline, and acted as art director on the Dead Space series at Visceral Games.
“Ian is one of those rare veterans who combines creativity, artistry, and passion into excellence on-screen.” said Crystal Dynamics’ co-head, Scot Amos (via. PC Gamer). “It’s a matching type of DNA that Crystal Dynamics has forged itself upon over these last few years. We’re very excited to welcome Ian as the newest top-tier talent joining our studio. His attitude, aptitude, and aspirations for crafting great game experiences are perfectly aligned with who and what Crystal Dynamics is all about.”
Rise of the Tomb Raider – the most recent game in the extensive adventure series – was directed by Brian Horton, who left Crystal Dynamics back in January to join Call of Duty studio, Infinity Ward (via. Polygon). Although the next game in the franchise has yet to be revealed, Milham expressed excitement for his future at Crystal Dynamics in an official press release.
“Adventure games have always been my first love. When the opportunity came to join Crystal Dynamics, I had to jump on it. This is the home of Lara Croft, who is a legend in action-adventure gaming and a pillar of the industry. I’ve admired Crystal’s work for a while now, as they continue to deliver top notch narrative and spectacle, coupled with deep systems and player choice. I’m very excited about where the studio is headed and I’m eager to be a part of it.”
Rise of the Tomb Raider released back in November for the Xbox One, and was later ported to the PC in January this year. The PlayStation 4 version will arrive on October 11, in a new 20th Anniversary edition. The PS4 release will include new co-op gameplay, VR support and all previous DLC, as well as extra outfits, weapons and a limited edition art book.
