Whilst Pokémon GO-fever is still very much in the air, it looks as if the Harry Potter universe is destined for similar paths, with rumours of a similar Harry Potter app coming from Pokémon GO developer Niantic Labs.
According to a recent report on HelloGiggles, the senior developer of Niantic, Marcus Figueroa, has said the company has obtained the rights to make a ‘Harry Potter GO’, after a heftily-signed petitioned showed considerable fan demand.
“We have acquired the rights for the app.” he reportedly said, “The demand for this title was absolutely insane, so we figured we’d give it a shot.”
He continued: “We want to do something with schools of witchcraft and wizardry, similar to pokestops in Pokemon Go. As wells a quest system, and possibly large scale completely interactive events, but no promises. That’s all I can say.”
It’s clear that Harry Potter dedicates have been hankering for a Wizarding World app ever since Pokémon GO’s official launch. Many fans took to signing a petition, the contents of which has now surpassed 40,000 signatures.
As for when players will be able to get their hands on the magical AR title, Figuera estimates it’ll be out by “early 2017,” according to Metro, whilst ultimately stating that it’s “hard to tell this early in the project.”
Whilst no official details have yet been divulged, the notion of searching your cupboards for Doxies for Hippogriffs and dueling in the local park is sure to be a welcome one amongst Wizards and Muggles alike, and with the highly-anticipated Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them coming this November, it sounds like Harry Potter fans have plenty to look forward to in the coming months.
And if you’re unsure how you’ll pass the time until November arrives, you can always delve into J.K Rowling’s latest entry in the Wizarding Universe, Harry Potter and The Cursed Child. Out officially today, the script returns to Hogwarts one final time to follow first-year Albus Severus, the son of The Boy Who Lived.
