Darth Vader is to retain his iconic voice in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, with the confirmation that James Earl Jones will return to voice the legendary villain.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, LucasFilm president Kathleen Kennedy revealed that the 85-year old Jones will reprise his famous vocal role, with a “variety of large-framed performers” donning the suit. She also spoke about just how much we will see Vader in the new movie.
“He will be in the movie sparingly. But at a key, strategic moment, he’s going to loom large.”
The article also reveals a little about Vader’s position in the story in Rogue One, which takes places approximately 19 years after events seen in Revenge of the Sith. Now in his armour following the injuries suffered during his battle with Obi-Wan Kenobi, Vader is still in the background of things, as director Gareth Edwards explained.
“Within the Rebellion, it’s not commonly spoken about. Within the Empire, there is the culture of knowing of the existence of Darth Vader. There’s definitely an underlying feeling that there is a power – a dark power – available to the Empire and that if you overstep your mark, you will suffer the consequences.”
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will be released on December 14.
