WWE Announce Release of Cody Rhodes

Cody Rhodes has been released by WWE.

A brief announcement on the company website confirmed the move, which had been widely-expected following Rhodes’ revelation on his personal Twitter account that he had requested his release.

It had been rumoured that WWE were planning on letting Rhodes’ contract run down and then release him later this year, however the former Intercontinental champion has seemingly decided to end his 10-year association with the company early – and on his own terms.

Rhodes has been wrestling under the Stardust gimmick since June 2014, with his highest-profile storyline coming last year, where his online rivalry with Arrow star Stephen Amell led to a tag-team match at SummerSlam with Amell teaming with Neville to take on Stardust and Wade Barrett. Rhodes and Amell resumed their rivalry earlier this year, leading some to speculate that it would result in a singles match at WrestleMania 32, though this never materialised.
