Lawbreakers is the newest project of North Carolina-based developer Boss Key Productions, and CEO Cliff Bleszinski is less than content with his home state’s decision to pass legislation permitting anti-LGBT discrimination. Bleszinski posted an image on Twitter of Lawbreakers yesterday (via. Polygon), outlining the political attitudes that will surface in the game – by way of gender-neutral toilets.
“Gender neutral bathrooms in our new game” tweeted Bleszinski, mentioning North Carolina Govenor Pat McCrory, “It takes place in the future, unlike the past you envision.”

Set in the year 2105, Lawbreakers takes place after the destruction of the moon, causing an earthquake that causes gravity on the planet to lapse. The game follows the war between law enforcement agencies and the “lawbreakers” that have brought war and drugs to the world.
Governor McCrory signed North Carolina’s House Bill 2 in March this year – a law that subsequently became known as the “bathroom bill.” HB2 forces people to use the bathrooms and locker rooms that align with the gender listed on their birth certificate. As such, this prohibits transgender individuals from using the facilities that match their gender identity.
Critics of HB2 also say the bill is essentially allowing discriminatory behaviour, as the bill bans local laws that protect LGBT people from discrimination. The House Bill was actually created as a hurried response to the government of North Carolina’s largest country, Charlotte, which recently expanded its nondiscrimination ordinance to protect LGBT people.
Over 15 corporations have publicly opposed the bill so far, with musicians like Bruce Springsteen and Demi Lovato cancelling scheduled performances in North Carolina in reaction to the passing of HB2. Governor McCrory was told this week that the House Bill violates many sections of the Civil Rights Act.
In an interview with EGMNow, Bleszinski said Boss Key now has two gender-neutral bathrooms, and claimed he wants to make the studio workplace as inclusive and progressive as possible.
Lawbreakers is in development for Windows PC. You can sign up for the game’s Alpha via its official website.
