The directors of the up and coming Star Wars spin-off – Chris Miller and Phil Lord – have found their young Han Solo in newcomer Alden Ehrenreich, after a weighted search through 2,500 auditions (via. Polygon).
Alden Ehrenreich, known for his work in Hail Caesar!, auditioned amongst more experienced actors such as Taron Egerton (Kingsman) and Ansel Elgort (The Fault in Our Stars), before ultimately bagging the role, according to The Hollywood Reporter. After final negotiations with Miller, Lord and Disney are complete, the actor will take on the shruggish space smuggler originally played by Harrison Ford in 1977.
Few details surrounding the film have been shared, but the Disney anthology movie will be centered around the origin story of Han Solo and lovable wookie, Chewbacca. The events of the film will take place years before A New Hope, before the pair joined Luke Skywalker against the Empire.
The Han Solo spin-off is intended to release in 2018, with Lord and Miller also writing the script for the film. Whilst it’s still a little long to wait to see Ehrenreich in action, the first anthology movie, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is due out this December, and will follow a group of rebel warriors’ attempts to steal plans to the Death Star.
