With Overwatch’s open beta now underway, Blizzard has shared more information about the game’s backstory, in a new video posted to their YouTube channel (via. GameSpot). You can watch the video above.
The video sees gorilla, Winston explaining that a team of heroes was assembled to protect society from the Omnics, an AI robot whose intended purpose to help humans has since become sinister.
After the Overwatch stopped the Omnic threat, however, they were soon labelled ne’er-do-wells, after their people decided their services were no longer required. How this happened isn’t explained here, but events may relate to another video, showing Tracer protecting an important robotic leader from Widowmaker.
Overwatch releases for PS4, Xbox One and PC on May 24. Those to preordered the game before April 29 will receive early access to the open beta, which runs from today at 12AM UK Time/4PM PT to May 9. The open beta will be open to everyone on May 4 at 12AM UK Time/4PM PT.
The PC version of Overwatch offers two types of preorder. One comes with the game and a Widowmaker Noire Skin, whilst the other – Origins Edition – contains five additional skins, in addition to a variety of other Blizzard goodies. Origins Edition will get you a baby Winston pet in World of Warcraft, a unique card back in Hearthstone, Diablo III’s Mercy’s wings and player portraits in Starcraft II. You’ll also get access to Tracer in Overwatch’s Heroes of the Storm.
