James Cameron has announced that he is now to direct another sequel to Avatar – bringing it up to four follow-ups to the first film.
Making an unannounced appearance at CinemaCon, the Titanic director revealed that he needs a fourth sequel to adequetely continue a story that seemed pretty well-told in the 2010 original.
“‘I’ve been working the last couple of years with a team of four top screenwriters to design the world of Avatar going forward: the characters, the creatures, the environment, the new cultures. So far, the art I’m seeing, is in pure imagination, really far beyond the first film. It’s going to be a true epic saga. So together, we’re going to continue to make this industry the greatest show on earth. That’s what we do.”
Original stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver and Stephen Lang are all expected to return.
Avatar 2 is currently scheduled for release in December 2018, with the further editions coming in 2020, 2022 and 2023, with all the movies being filmed concurrently.
