It now appears that hopes have been dashed for those excited about a Beetlejuice sequel.
Following earlier reports that director Tim Burton had confirmed that development on a sequel was “a go”, his spokesperson has come out and denied that is the case.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, the rep said that “the information was based on fabricated comments from the director” and that Beetlejuice 2 is not in development at this time.
Whether you feel that it is a good thing or not, Beetlejuice 2 is officially going ahead with director Tim Burton confirming that Warner Bros. has approved the script.
Also confirming that original cast members Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder are returning, the director didn’t, however, suggest when production would begin. He made the announcement in a recent interview with ShowBizSpy, where he said:
“The film is a go and has been approved by the Warner Bros. team, we have talked with the cast members we wanted for the film and they are all on board, this includes both Winona and Michael. We have the script in hand everything is in place all we need to do now is get ready to start filming.”
With the original Beetlejuice movie released in cinemas 28 years ago, it seems that there is definitely a marketing opportunity by holding off and releasing the sequel in 2018 to coincide with the 30th anniversary. Whether that will happen, though, is down to Warner Bros.
Back in August 2015, we got what can now be confirmed as the first announcement that the sequel was happening from Ryder, who said, “I think I can confirm it. It was very hush-hush top secret.”
Currently, there is no scheduled release for the sequel, but rest assured that ‘The Ghost with the most’ is coming back. All together now, BEETLEJUICE, BEETLEJUICE, BEETLE….
