The Force Awakens Breaks All-Time US Box Office Record

Star Wars: The Force Awakens has overtaken James Cameron’s 2009 sci-fi giant, Avatar, to become the most successful movie in North American cinema history.

As of Wednesday 6 January, Star Wars earned enough to pass the long-standing record of $760.5m (£520m) taken by Avatar over its lifetime.

James Cameron’s movie still holds the worldwide sales record by more than $1bn but given that Star Wars is yet to release in China and is still sitting strong across all global markets, this record is looking well within its sights.

Now holding more than 40 box-office records, including fastest $1bn, biggest opening weekend and biggest December release of all time, Star Wars: The Force Awakens continues to set the bar for every movie to follow, still less than a month since release.
