Star Wars: The Force Awakens has become the fastest movie to take $1 billion (£674m) at the global box office.
In just 12 days, JJ Abrams’ sci-fi epic has beaten the previous record of 13 days set by 2015’s other massive success story, Jurassic World. Where the two movies differ, though, is that Jurassic World’s box office also included takings from China, Star Wars is yet to open there.
This isn’t the first record broken by The Force Awakens, having already set new records for the biggest Thursday night opening, biggest one-day gross, biggest December debut, and biggest opening weekend of all time.
With more than $500m taken in the US alone and China still to see a release, Star Wars: The Force Awakens is currently on course to potentially knock Avatar off the top spot in the all-time biggest box-office rankings.
