In eager anticipation of the upcoming The Force Awakens, I thought I should add my thoughts to our 30 Days Of Star Wars with a look at a fun little member of the Microfighters 2nd Series: The Snowspeeder.
Set Number: 75074
Minifigures: Snowspeeder Pilot
The Microfighters series have become a pretty popular one for LEGO; an affordable option and way to boost a growing collection without breaking the bank. The build quality never suffers, and despite their smaller size in comparison to the larger sets available, they make good additions to any collection.
A Snowspeeder needs a pilot and we have a suitably good one here. Coming complete with a great printing design on the helmet, torso and legs, and something as simple as the pilot’s helmet; it is well made and fits firmly on the figure’s head, without jamming on so tight it takes the World’s Strongest Man to free it. Our brave pilot also comes with a standard issue firearm.
After fitting the first few pieces together, it was immediately clear this figure has a strong overall structure. This is greatly noticeable in the well-formed wings, although the angled hinges lead to a slight maneuverability issue. Granted, this may be more the designed intention rather than a flaw, however it is worth a mention. The method used to construct the guns situated on either side of the pilot gives the ability for you to rotate the chamber for a more realistic playing experience. There are two missiles situated underneath the main speeder which will keep little ones entertained while imagining firing at a formidable enemy. The design is well thought out and the piece placement makes the piece a sturdy item which will please those who purchase it to be used as either a play toy or a display piece.
Children in particular would like this as a Christmas gift, I feel, especially in the run up to the December Star Wars release. My 7-year old daughter took approximately 15-20 minutes to build this item, making the age range of 6-12 years pretty accurate
The Set Overall
The Snowspeeder is a great little addition for any collection and sits firmly on a flat surface. If I were to be really picky, I could refer back to the hinges on the wings, however this would be trivial. At its price, this is an affordable item and at 97 pieces, it provides a manageable challenge for various ages. Plus, it looks good and the colour scheme works well also.
