Roland Emmerich has lifted the lid on the new Independence Day film – Independence Day Resurgence.
At a press conference, the director confirmed that the film would be set 20 years after the events of the original movie, with a new wave of alien invaders forcing humanity to once again join together. Says Emmerich;
“We call it in the film the War of ’96. It’s like a post-World generation that’s unified, and that’s amazing to see a world come together with a common enemy. That’s a resurgence.”
Jeff Goldblum returns as David Levinson, who is now taking charge of the fight to protect the world. The actor also appeared at the press conference and explained the mindset of his character.
“It’s my job to lead the way in making sure everyone is safe on this precious planet. Having faced that last challenge, we’re all working in a beautiful way under one goal. Borders are no longer relevant in the same way, and that’s a very beautiful idea. We’re working together.”
The sequel is being made up of mainly new faces this time around, one of which is is Sela Ward, who plays the President of the United States. Bill Pullman, who played President Whitmore in the first film, will also appear in the follow-up.
New to the series is Jake, played by Liam Hemsworth. Jake works on vehicle called the Moon Tug (see picture above) on the lunar surface. Hemsworth took the time to explain a little of Jake’s story and how he ended up on the Moon Tug.
“It’s kind of unlucky how he ends up in that ship. Jake lost his parents in the first attack, he grew up in an orphanage, and eventually joined the military and became a fighter pilot, and eventually became one of the best of the best fighter pilots. I think his ego kind of got in the way, he made a bad decision and put someone’s life at risk, and he got the great job of driving this moon tug, which is basically a forklift on the moon.”
As previously reported, Will Smith will not appear in the sequel, though his character’s son, Dylan Hiller, will feature. Hiller is being played by Jessie Usher, who explained the pressure Dylan will be under.
“He grew up in the world that his dad saved, so you can only imagine what being the son of the world’s saviour is kind of like. It’s a lot of pressure, he’s under that shadow, but it’s not a negative thing at all. He took it for what it was and made a good thing out of it.”
Independence Day Resurgence is due to be released in the UK on 24 June 2016.
