Has Martin Freeman’s Civil War Role Been Revealed?

Ever since Marvel announced Martin Freeman for Captain America: Civil War, and made a point of not revealing who he will play, many have wondered just who exactly the Sherlock and Hobbit star would be.

Well now, thanks to Latino Review, we might have an answer.

Now we should point out, this is purely just speculation at this point because – as the site points out – “NO ONE wants to confirm this at the moment” but Freeman’s role may end up being that of Edward Chase, the Prime Minister of Britain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And what’s more, he may have actually been name-dropped in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Just before Andy Serkis’ Ulysses Klaue is confronted by Ultron, he is seen on the telephone talking to someone he calls “minister”. If this is Freeman’s Prime Minister Chase, it also brings up the possibility that Chase is firmly in bad guy territory for Civil War, likely leading the fight to establish the Superhero Registration Act that we are going to see Tony Stark and Steve Rogers go to war over. Additionally, Freeman is expected to appear in 2018’s Black Panther, so an alliance of sorts with Panther enemy Klaue would make sense.

As stated, this is all rumour right now, but there would appear to be some legs to this one. Knowing Marvel, we may have a while to wait for confirmation.

Captain America: Civil War releases on 6 May 2016.
