WWE Doctor Sues CM Punk Over Podcast Allegations; WWE Comments

WWE doctor Chris Amann has filed a lawsuit against Phil ‘CM Punk’ Brooks and Scott ‘Colt Cabana’ Colton following comments made on a podcast last year.

While appearing on Cabana’s Art of Wrestling podcast last November, the former WWE champion alleged that a “baseball-sized” lump on his back was diagnosed as a fat deposit and despite several requests made to WWE, it was not cut out. Punk then claimed that he later learned it was a MRSA staph infection. Following his controversial departure from the company, the lump was removed, something Punk described as the “most painful experience in his life”.

In response, Amman in his legal suit is claiming that he was “not requested by Brooks to treat and/or excise a lump, let alone a purple, baseball-sized lump” and that “his reputation has suffered as a result of the former WWE wrestlers’ comments and is seeking more than $1 million in compensatory damages, as well as an undetermined amount of punitive damages.”

Amman also claims that Punk’s allegations about his medical care while working for WWE “repeatedly and falsely impugned the integrity” of the doctor.

Cabana is included in the lawsuit for “helping Brooks falsely depict” Amann and that the wrestlers’ comments “are highly offensive in that they accuse [Amman] of a gross lack of integrity as a medical doctor, an inability to perform his professional duties as a medical doctor, and in placing the financial interest of his employer above life-threatening health conditions of his patients.”

WWE have released a statement of their own, defending their doctor. They have also taken the rather strange step of producing a video highlighting Punk’s back during the Royal Rumble match, attempting to show evidence that no such “baseball-sized” lump exists.

“In light of CM Punk’s allegations regarding WWE’s medical staff and the subsequent defamation lawsuit filed by Dr. Amann against CM Punk, WWE continues to have the utmost confidence in the ability and expertise of our world-class team of physicians, including Dr. Amann.

CM Punk claimed this past November that during the Royal Rumble pay-per-view event on January 26, 2014 he performed with a baseball-sized, purple lump on his back located near the waistband of his tights.

WWE’s investigation has shown the following:

  • CM Punk did not discuss this alleged condition with WWE’s team of physicians and trainers, nor did he discuss it with anyone in our Talent Relations department.
  • Subsequently, WWE has no medical records documenting this alleged condition.
  • The first time WWE was made aware of this alleged condition was when we received a letter from CM Punk’s attorney on August 22, 2014 after WWE terminated his contract.
  • There is clear video evidence from the 2014 Royal Rumble, which allows all to decide whether there is any appearance of a baseball-sized growth on CM Punk’s back.

It is believed that Punk and Cabana have not yet been served, though that is expected to be carried out shortly.

Punk walked out of WWE the night after Royal Rumble 2014, never to return. He confirmed on Cabana’s podcast that he received his termination paperwork on his wedding day, something WWE CEO Vince McMahon later claimed was “a coincidence”.

Punk is currently in training for his UFC debut.
