James Van Der Beek Stars in ‘Power Rangers’ Fan Film

The Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers may be some time away from a big budget, big screen adventure but that hasn’t stopped producer Adi Shankar and director Joseph Kahn bringing their own vision of the popular 90s kids show to the internet.

Together with Dawson’s Creed actor, James Van Der Beek and Battlestar Galactica actress, Katie Sackhoff, the duo have created a 14 minute uniquely gritty look at the heroes. This is Shankar’s fourth “Bootleg Universe” project which sees the titular group at odds in a bleak future controlled by evil machines.

“This is not a pitch,” Shankar said of the project that follows previous online shorts following popular comic book characters The Punisher, Venom and Judge Dredd.

Instead, it’s a bloody realistic interpretation of what happens to color-coded rangers Tommy, Jason, Kimberly, Billy, Zack and Trini after being “child soldiers” in an intergalactic war Shankar believes “they really had nothing to do with.”

“How’s that not like child soldiers?” Shankar says in a video introducing the short. “They’re going to have PTSD.”

Needless to say if the Lionsgate produced movie currently in progress has anywhere near the same production value we are in for a treat.

The Power Rangers movie reboot is set for release on July 22, 2016.
