It’s safe to say that Neill Blomkamp is a fan of Alien. And he knows how to get people talking.
Back in early January, the District 9 and Elysium helmer posted some pictures on his Instagram of concept art for an Alien project. The images showed the signature Engineer ship seen in both Alien and Prometheus, as well as a queen xenomorph, and the seeming return of both Ripley and a severely scarred Hicks. This, of course, got people speculating that something new – that wasn’t Prometheus – was coming from the Alien universe though Blomkamp did seem to somewhat douse those flames of rumour by adding the caption “was working on this. Don’t think I am anymore. Love it though” to his images.
This was followed earlier this week with the admission from the director that 20th Century Fox were interested in bringing his concept art to life and now, again courtesy of Blomkamp’s Instagram, comes confirmation;
What’s more, Variety are quoting sources who have claimed that a deal has been agreed at Fox to potentially bring Signourney Weaver and Michael Biehn back into the Alien fold as Ripley and Hicks respectively, though no casting has yet been confirmed. What we do know is that the movie will be distinct from the Prometheus series currently being developed for a sequel by Ridley Scott.
Following the less-than-enthusiastic response to Prometheus in some quarters, the prospect of an Alien film from the mind of a passionate fan-turned-filmmaker like Blomkamp – who has said that he has already figured out the whole movie in his head – is exciting and said excitement should only intensify now that Fox have given it the greenlight.
