As part of their company earnings call, Ubisoft have officially confirmed that the long awaited movie adaptation of one of their most valuable video game franchises is officially in production.
CEO Yves Guillemot confirmed that that movie will be released on December 21, 2016 in the US with a UK release date set for 9 days later.
“We have the pleasure to announce today that the green light has been given by New Regency, and the production has already started.”
“This is a very important milestone for the project and for our team on Assassin’s Creed.”
Michael Fassbender, long attached to the project will likely take on the role of Desmond Miles, the modern day protagonist in the Assassin’s Creed games from the original up to and including Assassin’s Creed III.
The plot is still unconfirmed, but many have speculated that the film will use Assassin’s Creed II’s Italian renaissance time period and setting.
For the uninitiated, the Assassin’s Creed story revolved around a barman, Desmond, who is thrust into a war between two ancient secret societies, the Assassin’s Brotherhood and the Templar Order. Learning that he is descended from some of the greatest Assassin’s in history, he is asked to relive his ancestor’s lives through a machine capable of reading DNA memory.
The games take place in multiple time periods with Assassin’s Creed II’s renaissance being considered the best in the series by the large majority of fans. That story played over three games and told the story of Ezio Auditore, the perfect story should the filmmakers be looking to do a trilogy of films.
