Marvel’s Phase Three movie announcement may have consequences for Dave Bautista’s future in WWE.
When he took a break from WWE in June to promote his appearance as Drax the Destroyer in Guardians of the Galaxy, the belief was that he would return to the company in early 2015. However, the universally-positive reception to Guardians led to speculation that Bautista had decided against returning to wrestling full-time and would instead focus on his acting career.
A two-year contract was the believed deal Bautista signed with WWE upon his return, including the six month break to promote Guardians. With Marvel’s announcement last week, any long-term plans WWE may have had for big Dave may have gone. Guardians of the Galaxy 2, with Drax as a prominent character, now has a confirmed release date of 5 May 2017, meaning filming for that will likely commence in mid-2016. In addition, Avengers: Infinity War parts one and two have been confirmed for release in May 2018 and 2019 respectively.
Batista has spoken recently about possibly retiring from WWE and working a final feud with Triple H, culminating at WrestleMania next year.
