Samsung have announced they are to stop producing plasma television sets – effectively spelling the end of the format.
The tech giant’s decision echoes that of Panasonic, who stopped their PDP (plasma display panels) production last December. Samsung will shut down their production on November 30, and gave a statement to CNET explaining their decision;
“We plan to continue our PDP TV business until the end of this year, due to changes in market demands. We remain committed to providing consumers with products that meet their needs, and will increase our focus on growth opportunities in UHD TV’s and Curved TV’s.”
Sales of plasma sets have declined in recent years, mainly thanks to reduced costs in the production of LED LCD displays and the advent and increased focus on 4K.
LG is now the last remaining major manufacturer of plasma TVs, th0ugh they too are expected to follow suit sooner rather than later.
