This weekend saw the release of one of the most anticipated superhero movies of the year, the action and character packed X-Men: Days of Future Past.
The reviews for the movie have been positive and the box-office takings have been even better. But whilst the film is bringing a lot of pleasure to many a cinema goer, the end of credits scene has confused many not familiar with the comic book lore.
In the after-credits scene we see a person with gray skin and blue lips maneuvering blocks of a pyramid in what looks like Ancient Egypt.
The camera pans around this mysterious character to reveal his face and we hear people around him chanting En Sabah Nur! The mutant Apocalypse’s true name.
For those of you who have some how managed to miss the news that the next X-flick has already been planned, Apocalypse will be the main antagonist of that movie.
In the lore, Apocalypse is known to be the first mutant, born more than 5,000 years before our regular X-Men heroes. He was born in Egypt in Akkaba and he wanted to be worshiped as a god, so playing around with the blocks to build the pyramid falls right into line with his origin.
Powers wise, Apocalypse is unbelievably strong, insanely fast, invulnerable, has the power to teleport and fly and is able to change his physical form. Throw into the mix the fact that he is also immortal and what you have is something to rival any of Marvel’s best heroes.
Although this end of credits scene gives us the first introduction to a character who will no doubt shake up the X-Men universe, the movie will not be set in Ancient Egypt and we’re unlikely to see the younger version of this character again.
That said, it’s an exciting time for the comic book fans who have been waiting for this characters introduction.
X-Men: Apocalypse is due for release in 2016.
