Jim Ross has been fired by WWE.
Ever since the announcement earlier this evening that Ross had retired from WWE, speculation has been growing that there was more to the story than originally announced.
It is being said that WWE’s announcement of Ross’ retirement was the company’s way of letting him go without suffering a major backlash amongst fans, due to the commentator’s standing amongst supporters.
His departure is believed to be in part due to his involvement in the WWE 2K14 press event during SummerSlam AXXESS weekend, during which Ric Flair took over proceedings, making several comments that WWE officials were furious about. One in particular was a line about John Cena being a “hardcore drinker”. As Ross was the host of the panel, WWE bosses feel he did not do his job and attempt to rein in Flair, with Ross actually at one point joking that the event was sponsored by Grey Goose – a brand of vodka – and that they had lost the script.
While it should be noted that 2K Games, who organised the event, were thrilled with the extra media attention the symposium garnered, WWE were furious, with Stephanie McMahon personally apologising to 2K officials. Following the show, Flair was told that he would not be used by the company until he began acting accordingly while working for the company.
Ross met with WWE owner Vince McMahon at WWE headquarters in Stamford within the last couple of days, where he was told his fate. It is unknown if Paul ‘Triple H’ Levesque or Stephanie McMahon were present at the meeting, however it is believed that the final call came from Vince himself.
Ross has yet to publicly comment, while Vince and Triple H have tweeted message of thanks for everything Ross contributed to the company.
