Emmerich planning a Stargate movie reboot

Director Roland Emmerich may have been in the media more recently for his current work on an Independence Day sequel but in a recent interview with Digital Spy he has said that he is also moving forward with a reboot of the sci-fi classic and fan favourite Stargate.

The director has made reference in the past to a possible reboot. A year ago he made this statement:

“Stargate has always had this empty hole. When we made the first one, we always intended on doing part two and three, and we were prevented for years. And our hope is that we can get another chance at Stargate and tell the entire story we wanted to tell.”

More recently however he had this to say on the project:

“We went to MGM, who has the rights, and proposed to them to do a sequel, but as a reboot… and reboot it as a movie and then do three parts. Pretty soon we’ll have to look for a writer and start.”

This is great news for fans of both the TV shows (SG1, Atlantis and Universe) and the original movie but many will question whether a reboot is the way to go with the original TV show SG1 essentially already doing that to the James Spader movie.

Are you excited about a possible return of Stargate following the hole left by the cancellation of Stargate Universe after only a couple of seasons?
