Chris Carter has hinted at a possible storyline for a planned third X-Files movie.
Carter admitted that the second film – I Want to Believe – was small-scale due to the budget, but a third film, should it be commissioned, would be on a larger scale and revert the story back to the mythology focused on in the original series, also referring to an important date in the show’s story.
“It’s really up to 20th Century Fox, whether they have the will to do it. I think all of us are interested in putting the band back together. I have an idea for a third movie in my head. The colonisation date has passed and that is something we wouldn’t ignore.”
“For the second movie, we only had the budget for a standalone story, but we want to go back to the mythology.”
The colonisation date Carter refers to is December 22 2012, information that was revealed in the final episode of the show. Carter also revealed that Simon Pegg – a noted X-Files fan – was considered for a role in the second film, and would also be looked at should a third film materialise.
“We actually thought about putting him in the second movie, but there was no part for him. I certainly would think about him if we were to go forward in any way.”
