Joss Whedon has revealed that his upcoming Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. TV show is not going to focus on The Avengers and will be it’s own show.
Speaking during a panel at the Television Critics Association event, Whedon admitted that the focus of the show has to remain on the cast, though if the story is good enough, he would put in a call to one of the superhero cast, including Samuel L. Jackson’s S.H.I.E.L.D. director Nick Fury.
“We’d love to have him [Sam Jackson],” on the show. He’s a movie star and a workaholic, so whether or not he makes time for us I can’t say yet. I hope so….I’m not going to go begging, and I’m not going to use up favors I need for The Avengers 2. As I say, the DNA of the show is the show. Those guys would be a delightful bonus, but we’re not building our arcs around them.”
There is some concern amongst fans that regular appearances from Thor and Iron Man et al could risk overshadowing the regular cast.
“The good thing about the universe is that they’re superstars in that universe. So if they showed up, if they overbalanced it slightly, that would actually make sense. That’s how people would react to them in the universe of the show, so I don’t think that’s problem. I do think it’s a problem if you have them too regularly and people are just wondering, ‘When do I get to see a movie star again?’ Instead of concentrating on these guys.”
The director also admitted that it is important to make sure that while the show does tie in to the Marvel Universe, it still stays separate enough to be it’s own show, something that could prove difficult with anticipation high for Thor: The Dark World in November, and Captain America: The Winter Soldier in April.
We’re still working that out. It’s a fluid process. The important thing is it’s a fun option, but it’s not the reason for the show. We don’t want to just be an Easter egg farm. We want them to come back for [the cast].”
One of the show’s main points of interest will be the return from the dead of Agent Phil Coulson, seemingly killed in The Avengers. There is a brief explanation given for Coulson’s resurrection in the show’s premiere, though it appears that story will continue throughout the series.
“We will be dealing with the issue. That will be part of the thread of the story.”
A new poster for the show has also been debuted;
