Vin Diesel has revealed that he was originally in discussions with Marvel about starring in a new franchise, before eventually agreeing to take on the role of Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, the actor confirmed that initial talks centred on him starring in a new IP that would launch on 2016 and 2017, before fan demand necessitated a more immediate role in the Marvel Universe, a role that Diesel has now virtually confirmed.
“I kind of take my hat off to them for being so creative and thinking outside the box. We were initially talking about a fresh IP, that was the focus of our conversation, was a fresh IP that would come out in 2016 and 2017 and would potentially launch a third phase.”
“With my schedule, it was almost impossible to imagine I could do anything immediate. I guess after they watched The Iron Giant or whatever, they came up with this idea of taking the strangest Marvel character, or the strangest Marvel character that’s ever hit film, and thought what I could do with that with motion capture and with my voice.”
Guardians of the Galaxy is currently filming in London, and has a release date scheduled of August 1 2014.
