Vin Diesel has seemingly confirmed his role in Guardians of the Galaxy.
There has been lengthy speculation that the actor would appear in the Marvel film, with most speculation actually being caused by various Facebook posts by Diesel himself. It appeared to reach a zenith when he posted – and then quickly removed – a picture of Groot, the talking tree who is a member of the intergalactic superhero group.
And now Diesel has been speaking to the LA Times about the likelihood of a Marvel role.
“I’m an actor. I can do whatever the … I want. As an actor, not everything has to bethe most obvious choice. And sometimes, the best thing you can do — as far as Steven Spielberg and his advice — is to defy expectations. So if everybody thinks you’re going to go for this one thing and you flip it entirely and go for the strangest Marvel character, it’s interesting. And when something is interesting, it’s inspiring.”
Many have wondered, given Marvel’s preference for secrecy, if there has been any dissatisfaction on their part concerning Diesel’s not-so-subtle references to negotiations with them, or the Groot role, specifically the image he posted on Facebook recently. The actor, however, claims this could not be further from the truth.
“I get inspired by things. So if somebody sends me a book of conceptual art that’s the best character design work I’ve ever seen — I’m not kidding, I see that and I want to be a little cryptic and I want to say something positive. Even if it’s as cryptic as an old, dated image of a character.”
“The last thing they are is mad. I’m pretty open, but I have been secretive about this. I went to Comic-Con and I got blasted while I was on the Hall H panel for “Riddick.” Someone asked a Marvel question. I couldn’t say anything because of that secrecy.”
Diesel also revealed that what Marvel came up with for him was “really interesting” and fit in with his busy schedule, further suggesting a voice role for a character he would have to do no filming for.
Guardians of the Galaxy is currently filming, with a scheduled release date of August 1 2014.
