Omate Truesmart – The Smartwatch Wars Have Begun

With recent reports coming out of both Apple and Samsung regards smartwatch designs it was only a matter of time before other companies started work on similar devices but despite the Omate Tresmart not exactly being a household name and global contender, they are almost ready to deploy.

Using a Kickstarter campaign the New York based company Omate were able to secure more $100,000 (£63,760) to put the watch in to production.  Unlike many of the smartwatches already on the market, Omate says the Truesmart can be fitted with a micro-Sim card to make use of its 3G chip. This will essentially allow the watch to make voice calls and send social media messages without having to be paired with a smartphone or tablet – although that is also an option as well. Here is a full list of the specifications that the watch is likely to have:

  • Dual Core Cortex A7 – 1.3GHz
  • Omate UI 1.0 / Android 4.2.2
  • 1.54’’ TFT by LG display (240 x 240)
  • Multi-touch Capacitive Touch Screen
  • Connectivity capabilities:
  • + 2G GSM: GPRS class 12 EDGE Multi-Slot Class 12
  • + 3G WCDMA: HSPA 7.2Mbps/5.76Mbps
  • + WiFi: IEEE 802.11b/g/n
  • + Bluetooth 4.0
  • GPS
  • Embedded 5Mpixel camera
  • Audio Speaker & Microphone
  • Memory: 512MB + 4GB + (expandable by microSD 8/16/32GB)
  • Micro SIM card
  • 600 mAh battery: up to 100 hours standby time
  • Messaging Hub: SMS/MMS/Email/SNS
  • G-sensor, E-Compass, Gyroscope, IP67
  • Vibration alert
  • Full set of pre-qualified Android applications
  • Over-the-Air (OTA) system firmware update

60b3a1ab8f3a5afb11cdb122d90967c2_largeThe company plans to have the first shipment of the watches ready by October 2013, potentially months ahead of the big companies.

One of the main concerns facing both Apple and Samsung now is can they match and eclipse technology like this because its doubtful this will be the only competition they have once they hit the market some time in the next year. One would hope that this encourages both to integrate the 3G (or 4G) technology into their designs but we will all have to wait and see.
