This past weekend saw Pacific Rim pass $100 million at the Chinese box office, marking it’s third consecutive weekend at number one.
The film took over $20 million in international sales this weekend, report The Wrap, meaning it has so far taken $286 million overseas, and a worldwide total of £385 million.
By passing the $100 million mark in China, Pacific Rim becomes only the second film to do that, the only other one being Iron Man 3, which has taken approximately $120 million since it opened in June. Pacific Rim’s performance there puts it above Kung Fu Panda‘s $92 haul, and The Avengers‘ $84 million take.
This latest news should go a long way towards guaranteeing a sequel for Guillermo Del Toro’s monsters vs robots epic, with a strong Chinese performance previously tipped to help that become a reality. The film had a budget of $200 million, with the latest figures putting takings at nearly double that.
