LOVEFiLM back away from Video Game Rentals

LOVEFiLM Video Games Header

Popular UK based rental service LOVEFiLM have announced that they will be stepping down from the video game market.

In a statement added to the company’s FAQ page, LOVEFiLM revealed the news and explained their reasoning behind the decision:

We are no longer offering games rental packages to either new customers, or those who wish to change from a non-games package.

In order to give the best possible service that we can, we are looking to focus on our strength, which is providing the best selection of film and TV content for our customers, and making it available whenever and wherever you want it.

Currently you’d still be able to sign up and use LOVEFiLM’s game rental services before this option is removed on the 24th July. Existing customers will not be getting off lightly either as their game rental services will be removed, with their accounts reverting to a movie-only package on the 8th August.

This retraction of service is a shock to say the least especially after Microsoft’s decision to remove their licence-based trade-in system for the Xbox One.

LOVEFiLM’s streaming service will still be available on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii & Wii U and presumably PlayStation 4 & Xbox One too following their launch.

As a current customer of LOVEFiLM only for video game rentals, I’ve always used the service as a sort of try-before-you-buy system as trialing a full game really gives you a feel for a game’s pros and cons in a way that you just cannot get from a regular demo. Unfortunately I only use the service for video games so this news for me will mean an instant cancellation come August, but cannot help but wonder who else is in the same mindset?

What are your thoughts on this decision? Do you currently rent Video Games from LOVEFiLM? Do you Have any alternative game rental services you like to recommend? Let us know in the comments below.

  1. Netflix is better for movies with their instant service anyway. I only ever used it for gaming so I’m glad I cancelled my account a few months back.

  2. I cancelled my account. Don’t get why Lovefilm would do this because I presume lots of people, like myself, only signed up to rent games, so they’re going to lose a lot of customers. I enjoyed some of the streamed stuff but netflix is better.
