Downey Jr. & The Rock Feature on Forbes’ Highest-Paid Actors list

Robert Downey Jr. has topped Forbes’ annual Highest Paid Actors list.

The Marvel star is said to have pulled in $75 million between June 2012 and June 2013, thanks mainly to his appearances in The Avengers and Iron Man 3.

Those two films both grossed over $1billion at the box office, with RDJ negotiating a sizeable amount of the profits from The Avengers and also earning more on that movie than anyone else, including director Joss Whedon. He recently signed a two-film contract extension with Marvel for The Avengers 2 and 3, and will receive a large upfront payment when the second film goes before the cameras early next year.

It is a Hollywood movie-style turnaround for Downey Jr, who was considered virtually unemployable due to drug issues before getting the Iron Man gig in 2008. Since then, he has become the face of that franchise, Marvel’s biggest star by a country mile, and a reliable bankable entity in Hollywood.

Also featuring on the list is Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, with Forbes estimating that the former WWE champion raked in $46million in the 12 month period. Johnson is now a bona fide movie star, having a film in the top 10 for 10 weeks in a row. His appearances in the Fast and the Furious and GI Joe movies are believed by many to have reinvigorated those franchises, and as well as being linked with sequels to those films, he is also currently filming his lead role in Hercules: The Thracian Wars. That $46million will also be joined by his earnings for his WWE work over the last year, during which time he headlined the Royal Rumble, Elimination Chamber and WrestleMania 29 events. He is said to have earned approximately $4million from the WrestleMania appearance alone.

The full top ten list is;

  1. Robert Downey Jr. – $75million
  2. Channing Tatum – $60million
  3. Hugh Jackman – $55million
  4. Mark Wahlberg – $52million
  5. Dwayne Johnson – $46million
  6. Leonardo DiCaprio – $39million
  7. Adam Sandler – $37million
  8. Tom Cruise – $35million
  9. Denzel Washington – $33million
  10. Liam Neeson – $32million

One question I do need to ask after seeing that list is, how has Adam Sandler made more money than Neeson, Washington and Cruise? How are people still watching Adam Sandler movies?
