Will Smith will not be appearing in the Independence Day sequel.
Following on from news earlier this week that the film – rumoured to be titled ID Forever Part 1 – has been given a release date, director Roland Emmerich has told NY Daily News that the actor won’t be returning for the film, as he is “too expensive”, while also adding that a number of the characters from the first film appear in the sequel’s script.
“Will Smith cannot come back because he’s too expensive. But he’d also be too much of a marquee name. It would be too much.”
“We have like half of the people that you would know from the first film. The other half are people who are new.”
ID Forever Part 1 is scheduled for release on July 3 2015, while a planned third film – ID Forever Part 2 – has not yet been given a date.
