Upcoming Microsoft update named Windows 8.1; free upgrade for existing users

Microsoft have confirmed that it’s upcoming Windows software update will be called Windows 8.1.

Furthermore, the update – previously code named ‘Windows Blue’ – will be available to existing Windows 8 and Windows RT users as a free upgrade, announced Microsoft’s CMO and CFO Tami Reller at an industry conference in Boston.


“Windows 8.1 will be delivered as a free update to Windows 8 and to Windows RT and it will be easy to get right from the Windows Start screen through the App Store.”

A preview of the update will be available from June 26, with the full update due to be released at the end of the year.
