Clark Gregg has suggested that the death of his Agent Coulson character may not have been all that it seemed.
Speaking at the Tribeca Film Festival, Gregg, who played Coulson in The Avengers, Thor and Iron Man 1 and 2, was asked about his exit from the Marvel movie franchise, and his somewhat-bewildering return in the upcoming pilot Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
“It was hard to miss the moment where that Asgardian bastard stabs me quite thoroughly…I was a little heartbroken.”
“We never saw the body. The cards were in the locker. There was a lot of people talking about the English Blu-ray, you didn’t see the spear come through Coulson.
“It would be surprising to me if this was a world where there wasn’t some reckoning for the fact that it’d be… you know, some level of deception must have been perpetrated on the Avengers.”
The English blu-ray comment is in regards to an edit made to the UK retail release of The Avengers (or Avengers Assemble in the UK), which saw the digital removal of the tip of the spear used by Loki to stab and seemingly kill Coulson. Gregg’s comments, while largely speculative, do raise some questions over whether Coulson’s demise was part of a devious S.H.I.E.L.D. cover-up. More will be known later this year when the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. pilot airs.
