Joss Whedon has admitted that Thanos is a part of his plans for the Marvel Universe, and dropped hints over the character’s future.
Speaking to Desde Hollywood at the recent Iron Man 3 premiere, Whedon spoke about Thanos and hinted that the villain’s eventual downfall may not come until much later. That ‘much later’ may in fact be The Avengers 3, which would be the ‘big finale’ of the Phase Three project. That could mean that the Thanos character would be established in Guardians of the Galaxy and The Avengers 2, while continually ‘threading through the universe’ during Phase Three, leading to a final battle in the third Avengers outing.
Well, Thanos is more powerful. He is so powerful he is not someone you can just try out and punch him. Like he did in the comics, you want him to be threading through the universe and to save the big finale for ‘the big finale’. He is definitely a part of what I have got going on.
Whedon also suggested that the existing members of the Avengers will soon be ‘shaken up’, which could either mean new enemies, or more likely new members.
The thing about the Avengers is that they are very powerful but not very stable. So, there will definitely be some people that will shake them up in the next installment.”

The Avengers 2 will start filming in the UK early next year, with a scheduled release date of May 1 2015.
