A new report has claimed that Christian Bale and Christopher Nolan will return to the Batman franchise as part of the development of a Justice League film.
Latino Review – who boast that their record of DC Comics’-related scoops is impeccable – are reporting that Nolan is now overseeing the whole DC Universe project at Warner Bros. – not overly surprising considering he worked on the Dark Knight Trilogy and on the upcoming Man of Steel also. The speculation is that he will act as “a Godfather” on a JL movie, and also produce alongside Man of Steel director Zack Snyder. Allegedly, Warner bosses want the film set in the same universe as the Batman trilogy, meaning a return under the cowl of Christian Bale. Additionally, the Justice League film would also tie in with Man of Steel. Thus, Bale and Henry Cavill appearing together.
Bale himself has never ruled out returning for a fourth Batman outing, actually telling Empire Magazine last summer that if the story was the right one, he would “love the challenge of making a fourth one work.”
If Warner can pull this off – assuming the story is true, of course – and get Justice League back on course for it’s rumoured 2015 release, then they can throw it directly into a superhero battle with Marvel’s The Avengers 2, also due for release in that year.
My suspicion is that Warner may not go full Justice League straight away, with many questioning the big-screen attraction of Wonder Woman, Aquaman and Green Lantern (especially after the latter’s less-than-stellar movie outing a few years ago), and instead stick with just Batman and Superman teaming up. As DC’s two biggest entities, a Batman-Superman duo movie would do huge business. This way, they could introduce the other JL members via short cameos and gauge the reactions and interest, opening the door to possible full Justice League outing later down the line.
