IOC President responds to wrestling controversy

International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge has been speaking about the criticism over the IOC voting to remove wrestling from the 2020 Olympics.

Talking at a press conference, Rogge stated that wrestling will still be part of the 2016 games, and that he is investigating ways to reinstate the sport for 2020.

“The vote of yesterday is not an elimination of wrestling from the Olympic games. I want to be very clear on that…We agreed we would meet at the first opportunity to have discussions. I should say [international wrestling federation] FILA reacted well to this disheartening news for them. They vowed to adapt the sport and vowed to fight to be eventually included in the 2020 slot.”

The IOC executive board are due to meet in May for the next vote regarding the 2020 games, and a final vote will be made in September.
