New casting rumours for Guardians of the Galaxy’s Drax

Much of the speculation when it comes to casting for Marvel’s upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy has focused on that of Star Lord. But let’s switch focus for a bit and turn to another of the film’s characters; Drax the Destroyer.

Latino Review are reporting that there are three actors being considered for the role, and they are Isaiah Mustafa, Dave Bautista, and Brian Patrick Wade.

Mustafa appeared in 2011’s Horrible Bosses, and also previously expressed interest in playing another of Marvel’s characters, Luke Cage. The next candidate, Bautista, will be known by our KO Panda readers as former WWE champion Batista. He appeared in The Scorpion King 3: Battle for Redemption and more recently, The Man with the Iron Fists. Finally, Wade has mostly appeared on TV shows, notably NCIS and The Big Bang Theory.

Just for background purposes, the character of Drax actually used to be a man named Arthur Douglas. But when he and his family are attacked by Thanos, Douglas’ soul is placed into a stronger body with the sole purpose of battle against Thanos. One of Drax’s more interesting powers is the ability to sense Thanos’ presence from light-years away.

Despite Guardians being somewhat (if not largely) unknown to the mainstream public, the film is expected to be a hit because of Marvel’s track record with success over the last several years. And after Thanos’ mid-credits appearance in The Avengers, and expected role in The Avengers 2, it seems Guardians is being perfectly primed to introduce that character to the mainstream.

Guardians of the Galaxy is due for release in August 2014.
